High blood sugars linked to long-term damage
Posted by: | CommentsPeople with diabetes may experience blood sugar highs as well as lows. Instances of low blood sugar may catch your attention right away, but don’t turn your back on the highs.
High blood sugar or hyperglycemia means your blood sugar is high. This range may be often 200 or higher.
It may give no signs at times, but high blood glucose is problem. Over time, high blood glucose damages your large and small blood vessels. This damage can affect the whole body. It can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, blindness, nerve damage and loss of limbs. Keeping your blood sugar under control can help avoid these problems.
Signs of high blood sugar:
- Increased thirst
- Increased need to urinate
- Increased tiredness
- Blurred vision
If you feel these signs, check your blood sugar right away.
If it’s too high:
- Drink water or other sugar-free liquids to stay hydrated.
- If you take insulin, you may need an extra dose. Ask your healthcare provider for instructions about taking extra insulin.
